Sweet
Swan
of Avon
! What a sight it were
To see
thee in
our waters yet appear, and
make those flights upon the
banks of
Thames hat so did take Eliza, and Tour
James
But, say I see thee in the Hemisphere
Advanc'd, and made a
constellation there!
Sine forth, thou Starre of Poets, and
with rage,
Or influence, chide,or cheer the drooping Stage:
Which, since thy flight from hence, hath
mourn'd like night
And despaires day,
but for
thy Volume's light.
The
above is the concluding verse of the
dedicatory poem by
Ben Jonson in the preface
of the first folio edition of Shakespeare's plays,
1623. It is the earliest Known printed
reference to Swan of
Avon"
